Lipari is the largest and most populated of the 7 Aeolian Islands — and it's been central since 4000 BC when Neolithic traders came for the OBSIDIAN. Black volcanic glass, sharper than surgical steel, traded across the Mediterranean from this island. Today Lipari is the base camp: the best connections to all other islands (Stromboli, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi), the most restaurants, the archaeological museum, and the PUMICE beaches — white stone so light it floats on water, quarried here until 2007.
The Castello (citadel): Fortified acropolis above the marina — Greek walls, Norman cathedral, and the Museo Archeologico Eoliano — one of the finest archaeological museums in Italy. Neolithic obsidian tools, Greek theatrical masks (the BEST collection outside Athens), Bronze Age pottery, underwater archaeology from the shipwrecks surrounding the islands. €6. Spiaggia Bianca (White Beach, Porticello): Pumice quarry beach — white pumice sand, turquoise water. The quarry walls rise white behind you. The pumice floats — throw a piece in the sea and watch. Spiaggia di Ossidiana (Obsidian Beach, Canneto): Black glass pebbles — actual obsidian mixed with dark volcanic rock. Two beaches on one island: white pumice, black obsidian. Geology's sense of humor.
Boat tour around Lipari: €25-35 — sea caves, faraglioni (rock stacks), the pumice coast from the water. Lipari town: Marina Corta (the small harbor — restaurants, bars, boats to other islands). Corso Vittorio Emanuele (evening passeggiata). The views to Vulcano: From Lipari's south coast, Vulcano is 1km away — the fumaroles visible, the sulfur smell carried by the wind.
From Milazzo (Sicily): Hydrofoil 55 min (€18-22), ferry 1.5h (€10-12). From Naples: Seasonal ferry 12h (overnight) or hydrofoil 5h. From Messina: Hydrofoil 1.5h. Stay 3+ nights: Use Lipari as base to day-trip other islands — Stromboli (night eruption boat tour), Vulcano (mud baths+crater hike), Salina (capers+Malvasia wine), Panarea (glamour+nightlife). Best season: June-September. July-August crowded+expensive. May+October: warm, quiet, half-price.
