The Valle dei Templi in Agrigento is the largest and most impressive archaeological site in Sicily: a ridge of seven Greek temples (6th-5th century BC) overlooking the Mediterranean, built by the ancient city of Akragas โ which Pindar called "the most beautiful city of mortals." The Temple of Concordia (430 BC) is the best-preserved Doric temple outside Athens โ all 34 columns standing, both pediments intact, the cella walls complete. It survived because it was converted to a Christian church in the 6th century (the arched openings in the cella walls are the only modification). In February, the almond trees between the temples bloom, and the Sagra del Mandorlo in Fiore (Almond Blossom Festival) fills the valley with folk performances, music, and the pink-white canopy of flowers that makes the temples look like they were placed in a Japanese garden by an architect with unlimited ambition. Plan my Sicily trip โTemple of Concordia (430 BC): Walk around the outside (you cannot enter) โ the 34 columns, the pediments, and the warm golden tufa stone in late afternoon light. This is the photograph. Temple of Hera (Juno, 450 BC): At the eastern end of the ridge โ partially standing, dramatic against the sky. Fire damage from the Carthaginian siege of 406 BC is still visible as reddening on some stones. Temple of Heracles (Hercules, 510 BC): The oldest โ 8 columns re-erected, the rest fallen in dramatic piles. Temple of Zeus (Olympian Jupiter, 480 BC): Would have been the largest Doric temple ever built (112m ร 56m) โ destroyed by earthquakes, the fallen telamones (giant male figures used as columns, 7.6m tall) lie where they fell. A reconstruction lies on the ground. Giardino della Kolymbethra: A sunken garden (recovered by FAI) between the temples โ citrus groves, ancient water channels, and the Mediterranean agriculture that the Greeks introduced. โฌ4.
