Two thousand years ago, Baia was the most exclusive resort in the Roman Empire. Emperors โ Augustus, Nero, Claudius, Hadrian โ built pleasure villas along this stretch of coast west of Naples. Senators competed for the best waterfront. The poet Horace called it the most beautiful bay in the world. Then the ground sank. Bradyseism โ the slow volcanic subsidence of the Campi Flegrei โ lowered the coastline by 6-8 meters over the centuries, and the entire resort district slid beneath the waves. Today you can snorkel or dive over a Roman city on the seabed: mosaic floors, marble columns, nymphaea with statues still in position, the walls of imperial reception rooms โ all at 3-6 meters depth, visible through water that's often crystal-clear. Plan my Baia underwater visit →The Nymphaeum of Emperor Claudius: A submerged room with marble statues of Claudius as Jupiter, Antonia Minor as Aphrodite, and Octavia as a maiden โ copies now stand in position (the originals are in the Baia Castle museum above). The scale of the room and the quality of the sculpture visible through water is surreal. Villa dei Pisoni: A patrician villa with mosaic floors, thermal rooms, and a garden colonnade โ all at 5m depth. The mosaics are black-and-white geometric patterns, still sharp after 2,000 years. The road: You swim over the ancient Via Herculanea โ a paved Roman road with curbstones, now occupied by fish.
1. Snorkeling tour (no experience needed): Guided snorkeling over the shallow sections (3-5m depth). You float on the surface with mask and fins while a guide explains what you're seeing below. €40-55/person, 2h, includes equipment. Minimum age usually 8-10. The mosaics and structures are clearly visible from the surface. 2. Scuba diving (certification required): PADI Open Water or equivalent. Dive directly over the ruins at 5-12m depth. €60-80/person. Much more immersive โ you hover above the mosaics, swim through doorways, look statues in the eye. 3. Glass-bottom boat (no swimming): For those who don't swim. A transparent-hulled boat cruises over the site. €12-18. Less immersive but you still see the ruins clearly. Operators: Centro Sub Campi Flegrei (centrosubcampiflegrei.it) is the main authorized operator. Book at least 1 week ahead in summer.
The Museo Archeologico dei Campi Flegrei in the Aragonese castle above Baia houses the original statues recovered from the underwater site, plus finds from across the Phlegraean Fields. The nymphaeum reconstruction โ original statues in a recreated room setting โ is outstanding. €5 entry. The castle terrace has views over the entire submerged city area. Combine above + below for the full picture: museum first (understand what you'll see), then snorkel/dive (experience it underwater).
Get there: Cumana train from Naples Montesanto station to Baia (40min, €2.20). By car: 30min from Naples center. Season: snorkeling/diving April-November. Best visibility: June-September. Water temperature: 18-26°C. Book ahead: centrosubcampiflegrei.it โ tours fill quickly in summer. Bring: the operator provides everything, but bring sunscreen and a towel. Duration: snorkel 2h, diving 2-3h. Add 1.5h for the castle museum. Combine with: Campi Flegrei (Solfatara, Pozzuoli amphitheater), Naples (30min), Pompeii (1h).
