On a headland jutting into the Ionian Sea south of Crotone, a single Doric column stands against the sky. It's the last remnant of the Temple of Hera Lacinia โ one of the most important sanctuaries of Magna Graecia, where Greek colonists, athletes, and pilgrims came from across the Mediterranean to worship. Crotone itself was founded by Greeks in 710 BC and became the home of Pythagoras, who established his philosophical-mathematical school here. The city's athletes won Olympic titles. Its army defeated the rival Greek colony of Sybaris in 510 BC so thoroughly that they diverted a river over the ruins. Today Crotone is a modest Calabrian city, and that single column on the cape is the most poignant image of Magna Graecia's lost glory. Calabria guide →
Plan my Calabria trip →The Temple of Hera Lacinia (5th century BC): Once a massive Doric temple, now reduced to that single column โ the "Colonna" that gives the cape its name. The temple was a Panhellenic sanctuary: all Greeks were welcome regardless of their city-state. Hannibal stopped here during his Italian campaign. The column is fenced but the surrounding archaeological area (temple foundations, sacred buildings, Roman-era structures) is open. The setting is the real draw: the column against the Ionian Sea, wild Mediterranean scrub, the cape dropping to blue water on three sides.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Crotone: In the city center, this museum holds the treasures from Capo Colonna and the surrounding area โ the Diadema di Hera (a gold crown from the temple), Greek pottery, votive offerings, and Pythagorean-era artifacts. €5. Small but concentrated.
Capo Colonna: 11km south of Crotone center. By car only (no public transport to the cape). Museum at the cape: €3. Crotone museum: €5. Getting to Crotone: Crotone airport has seasonal flights. Train from Catanzaro (1.5h) or Cosenza (2h). Stay: Crotone (€45-75/night โ limited tourism infrastructure). Combine with: Le Castella (the Aragonese sea-castle, 15km south โ spectacular), Calabria Ionian coast, Isola di Capo Rizzuto marine reserve (best snorkeling in Calabria).
