Castelsardo is built on a volcanic promontory on Sardinia's northern coast, the medieval citadel climbing steeply to the Castello dei Doria (12th century, Genoese) at the summit. The town's silhouette โ stone houses ascending to a castle on a point surrounded by sea โ is the most dramatic on Sardinia's coast. The old town's alleys are steep, narrow, and lined with women weaving baskets (cestini) from dwarf palm fronds and asphodel โ a tradition that survives here as genuine craft, not tourist performance. Nearby: the Roccia dell'Elefante (Elephant Rock) โ a trachyte boulder naturally eroded into the shape of an elephant, with pre-Nuragic domus de janas (fairy houses โ rock-cut tombs) carved into its base. Plan my Sardinia trip →Castello dei Doria: Genoese fortress (12th century) at the summit โ now the Museo dell'Intreccio Mediterraneo (Museum of Mediterranean Weaving), displaying basketry from across the Mediterranean. €5. The castle terrace has 360-degree views โ the Corsican mountains are visible on clear days. The old town: Climb the steep lanes from the harbor to the castle โ the basket weavers sit in doorways and on steps, working palm and asphodel with fingers that have done this for 60 years. Buying directly from them (€10-40 for baskets) supports a living tradition. Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate: 16th century, overlooking the sea โ the bell tower is the most photographed element of Castelsardo's skyline. Roccia dell'Elefante (3km east): A natural trachyte formation shaped like an elephant. Two domus de janas (pre-Nuragic rock-cut tombs, 3000-2000 BC) are carved into its base โ you can enter them.
Getting there: car from Alghero (1h), Sassari (30min), Olbia (1.5h). Porto Torres ferry port (30min). Stay: €50-90/night. Eat: seafood โ Il Cormorano (waterfront, €25-40), La Guardiola (castle area, views, €20-35). Combine with: Alghero (1h), Stintino/La Pelosa beach (1h โ the most famous beach in Sardinia), Asinara island (ferry from Stintino), Sassari (30min).
