Italian Christmas isn't one thing. Rome has the Pope and Piazza Navona. Milan has the world's most photographed Christmas tree. Florence imports German-style markets into Renaissance piazzas. Naples builds the most elaborate nativity scenes on Earth โ entire STREETS dedicated to handmade presepi figurines. Venice in winter fog is the most atmospheric city in Europe. Each city celebrates Christmas through the lens of its own identity.
The Duomo Christmas Tree. The largest tree in Italy โ 30m+, 80,000 lights, Swarovski star. Via Montenapoleone (luxury shopping Christmas windows โ Gucci, Prada, Armani compete for the most spectacular display). Oh Bej! Oh Bej! market (Castello Sforzesco, December 7-10 โ Milan's patron saint festival, artisan stalls, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts). La Scala opening night (December 7, Sant'Ambrogio โ the most prestigious opera premiere in the world. Tickets โฌ50-2,500. The protest outside is also a tradition).
Weihnachtsmarkt (German Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce โ wooden stalls, glรผhwein, strudel, handcrafted ornaments). Firenze Winter Park (ice skating rink at the Parterre). Presepe in Piazza del Duomo (life-sized nativity). Torrone festival (nougat vendors throughout the centro). The Duomo lit against December sky at 5pm = the most Christmassy single image in Tuscany.
Via San Gregorio Armeno. THE most important street in Italian Christmas. An entire alley of artisan workshops making presepi figurines โ not just the Holy Family, but caricatures of politicians, footballers, celebrities, all hand-sculpted and painted. The tradition is 300+ years old. Workshops are open year-round but December is insane โ shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, 200+ stalls. Midnight fish dinner (La Vigilia): Naples does the Christmas Eve fish feast more intensely than anywhere โ 7+ courses of seafood, capitone (eel), baccalร , from 8pm to midnight.
Venice in winter is Venice at its most beautiful. Fog over the canals, empty piazzas, the specific silence of a city without summer crowds. No Christmas market (Venice doesn't need one โ the city IS the spectacle). What's special: Murano glass Christmas ornaments (handmade, โฌ15-50, the most beautiful tree decorations in the world). New Year's concert at La Fenice (the opera house, December 31, broadcast live on RAI). Carnival starts in February โ Christmas in Venice is the calm before the masks.
Luci d'Artista (Artist Lights โ November-January). The most spectacular Christmas lights installation in Italy โ contemporary artists design light sculptures installed across the city. Not just decoration โ actual art. Via Roma, Piazza San Carlo, Via Po all transformed. Mercatino di Natale (Piazza Solferino โ wooden chalets, Piedmontese specialties, bicerin hot chocolate). Turin at Christmas = the most elegant city + the best hot chocolate in Italy.
