Since 1960, the Biennale del Muro Dipinto has invited artists to paint directly on the walls of Dozza's medieval houses. Over six decades, the entire village has become an open-air gallery โ over 200 murals on facades, archways, staircases, and garden walls, ranging from figurative to abstract, from 1960s Italian art to contemporary international work. The result is a borgo where medieval architecture and modern art coexist on every surface. Above the village, the Rocca Sforzesca (15th century, beautifully preserved) houses the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia-Romagna โ the official wine cellar representing every DOC/DOCG in the region. Plan my Bologna trip →The murals: Walk every street โ each building is a canvas. The best are marked with artist name and year plaques. Styles range wildly โ Pop Art next to Informale next to photorealism. The juxtaposition with medieval stone walls creates a texture that purely modern galleries can't achieve. Rocca Sforzesca (15th century): Sforza fortress with intact towers, frescoed rooms, and the Enoteca Regionale โ a cellar stocking wines from across Emilia-Romagna for tasting and purchase. Wine tasting: €5-15 for 3-5 wines. Biennale del Muro Dipinto (September, even years โ next: 2026): During the Biennale, artists paint new murals live in the streets โ the village becomes a performance space for 2 days.
Getting there: car from Bologna (30min via A14, exit Castel San Pietro). Imola (15min). Free to walk the murals. Rocca: €6. Enoteca tasting extra. Duration: 1.5-2 hours. Eat: Osteria San Domenico (Imola, 15min โ 1 Michelin star for decades, €50-80), or simple osterie in Dozza (€20-30). Combine with: Bologna (30min), Imola (15min โ F1 circuit, Rocca Sforzesca), Ravenna mosaics (1h).
