Erice sits at 751m above western Sicily, wrapped in fog for 200 days a year. When the clouds part, you see Africa. When they close, you see nothing โ the village disappears into white, the cobblestones glisten, the stone walls drip, and you understand why the Phoenicians built a temple to Astarte (goddess of love and war) on this exact summit 3,000 years ago. The Romans rededicated it to Venus. The temple ruins still crown the cliff edge. Below them: a medieval walled village of 500 residents, cobblestone alleys so narrow two people can't walk side by side, and the most famous pastry shop in Sicily โ Maria Grammatico's, where almond sweets are made from a recipe the nuns taught her when she was an orphan in the convent at age 11.
Castello di Venere (Venus Castle โ Norman fortress built on the ancient temple of Venus. Cliff-edge ruins, panoramic terrace, โฌ6). Torretta Pepoli (19th-century neo-Gothic tower on the cliff โ the most photographed building, viewpoint over Trapani, Egadi Islands, and on clear days Tunisia). Duomo (14th century, Gothic, detached bell tower you can climb). The walls: walk the medieval fortification circuit โ the town is still enclosed by its original Norman-Arab walls. The fog: don't fight it. Erice in fog is MORE atmospheric than Erice in sun. The alleys become corridors in a stone cloud.
Maria Grammatico (Via Vittorio Emanuele 14). The most famous pastry shop in Sicily. Genovesi ericine (pastry shells filled with custard cream, โฌ2.50 โ the Erice specialty). Frutta di Martorana (almond paste fruits, hand-painted, almost too beautiful to eat). Dolci di mandorla (almond cookies from the convent recipe). Mary's story โ raised in the San Carlo convent, learned the nuns' secret recipes, opened her shop in 1964 โ is one of Sicily's great food legends.
Funivia (cable car) from Trapani: 10 min, โฌ9 return, spectacular views over the salt pans and Egadi Islands during the ascent. Runs April-October daily, limited winter schedule. By car: 30 min winding road from Trapani. Parking outside the walls (โฌ2-3). Combine with: San Vito Lo Capo (45 min), Favignana ferry from Trapani (30 min), Segesta Greek temple (30 min). Stay overnight for the experience of Erice after the day-trippers leave โ the fog, the silence, the lit alleys.
