Plan my Florence day →8:30am: Uffizi Gallery (€25, book 8:30am entry). Strategy: start on the top floor (everyone starts at bottom = top is empty). Room 10-14: Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera — the paintings that define Renaissance beauty. Room 15: Leonardo's Annunciation. Room 35: Michelangelo's Tondo Doni. Room 90: Caravaggio. Allow 2h. Move fast but stop for the 5 that stop you.
10:45am: Walk to Duomo (5 min). Dome climb (€30 combo, book at duomo.firenze.it — includes Baptistery, Bell Tower, Crypt). 463 steps. Between the inner and outer shells, you see Vasari's Last Judgment frescoes from 3m away. The top: 360° Florence. The engineering: no central support, double shell, herringbone brickwork. Nobody had done this before. It changed architecture forever. 1h.
12pm lunch: Mercato Centrale (10 min walk). Da Nerbone lampredotto (€4). Or Antico Vinaio schiacciata sandwich (€5-8, Via dei Neri 74r). 30-45 min.
1pm: Galleria dell'Accademia — David (€16, book 1pm entry). Turn the corner. There he is. 5.17 meters of marble. The veins on his right hand. The tension in his neck. Michelangelo was 26. The marble block had been abandoned by two other sculptors. He saw David inside it and cut away everything that wasn't David. Allow 45 min — the unfinished "Prisoners" (slaves emerging from raw marble) are almost as powerful.
2pm: Walk through Oltrarno — cross Ponte Vecchio (gold shops, don't buy). Via Maggio artisan workshops. Piazza Santo Spirito (the local piazza, unlike the tourist squares north of the river). Gelato at Gelateria della Passera (Via Toscanella 15r).
4pm — choose one: Palazzo Pitti + Boboli Gardens (€16 combo — Raphael rooms, Titian, vast Renaissance garden) OR San Miniato al Monte (free — 1018 AD, the most beautiful Romanesque church in Florence, above Piazzale Michelangelo, fewer tourists, Gregorian chant at 5:30pm).
6:30pm: Piazzale Michelangelo — THE sunset viewpoint. The Duomo, Arno, Ponte Vecchio, and the Tuscan hills turning gold. Bring wine (€5 from a shop). Stay until dark. This is the view that makes everyone book a return trip.
8:30pm dinner: Trattoria 4 Leoni (Piazza della Passera, Oltrarno — pear + pecorino ravioli, €12) or Trattoria Sostanza (butter-fried bistecca, since 1869, book ahead).
