San Lorenzo market stalls (outside): Tourist leather market. Quality ranges from excellent to terrible within 10 meters. The test: real leather is warm to touch, smells like leather (not plastic), and bends without cracking. If the "leather" jacket costs €20: it's plastic. Real leather jackets: €100-300. Negotiate — start at 50% of asking. Walk away. They'll call you back.
The Mall Firenze (Via Europa 8, Leccio Reggello — 30 min by bus from Florence SMNA station, €7 each way, buses every 30 min). Gucci (30-70% off), Prada (30-50%), Ferragamo (40-60%), Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Tod's, Armani. A Gucci bag that costs €1,200 in the boutique is €500-700 here. Go at opening (10am) for best selection. Weekday = less crowded. VAT refund for non-EU shoppers on top of outlet prices.
Barberino Designer Outlet (30 min north of Florence by car). 130 stores. Bigger but less prestigious brands than The Mall. Good for: Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Levi's + Italian brands. For fashion: The Mall. For everything else: Barberino.
Paper + bookbinding: Il Papiro (Via Porta Rossa 76 — marbled paper since 1976), Giulio Giannini e Figlio (Piazza Pitti 37 — bookbinding since 1856). Handmade journals €15-50. Gold on Ponte Vecchio: 40+ jewellers on the bridge since 1593. Window shopping is free and spectacular. Buying: €50-5,000.
