Florence is where Italian craftsmanship was born. The leather guild (Arte dei Cuoiai) has been working here since the 13th century. The gold trade on Ponte Vecchio dates to 1593 (when the Medici expelled butchers and installed goldsmiths โ they didn't want to smell meat from their private corridor above). Today, Florence shopping splits into three worlds: the tourist leather market outside San Lorenzo (negotiable, quality varies wildly), the artisan workshops in Oltrarno (genuine, handmade, worth every euro), and The Mall outlet (Gucci, Prada, Ferragamo at 30-70% off, 30 minutes from the city). This guide separates the real from the fake. Full Italy shopping โ
Plan my shopping trip โScuola del Cuoio (Leather School) (Via San Giuseppe 5r, inside Santa Croce church complex). Founded 1950 by Franciscan monks and the Gori/Casini leather families. Watch artisans make bags, wallets, journals, belts in real time. Buy directly โ โฌ30-500. Every piece handmade on-site. The most trustworthy leather in Florence. Free to visit and watch.
Oltrarno workshops: Via Maggio, Borgo San Frediano, Via dello Sprone. Small ateliers where leather workers make custom bags, belts, sandals. โฌ40-200. You can commission custom pieces โ a belt in your exact measurements, a bag in your chosen colour, ready in 2-5 days. Oltrarno guide โ
San Lorenzo market stalls (outside): Tourist leather market. Quality ranges from excellent to terrible within 10 meters. The test: real leather is warm to touch, smells like leather (not plastic), and bends without cracking. If the "leather" jacket costs โฌ20: it's plastic. Real leather jackets: โฌ100-300. Negotiate โ start at 50% of asking. Walk away. They'll call you back.
The Mall Firenze (Via Europa 8, Leccio Reggello โ 30 min by bus from Florence SMNA station, โฌ7 each way, buses every 30 min). Gucci (30-70% off), Prada (30-50%), Ferragamo (40-60%), Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Tod's, Armani. A Gucci bag that costs โฌ1,200 in the boutique is โฌ500-700 here. Go at opening (10am) for best selection. Weekday = less crowded. VAT refund for non-EU shoppers on top of outlet prices.
Barberino Designer Outlet (30 min north of Florence by car). 130 stores. Bigger but less prestigious brands than The Mall. Good for: Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Levi's + Italian brands. For fashion: The Mall. For everything else: Barberino.
Paper + bookbinding: Il Papiro (Via Porta Rossa 76 โ marbled paper since 1976), Giulio Giannini e Figlio (Piazza Pitti 37 โ bookbinding since 1856). Handmade journals โฌ15-50. Gold on Ponte Vecchio: 40+ jewellers on the bridge since 1593. Window shopping is free and spectacular. Buying: โฌ50-5,000. Perfume: Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella (since 1612, the world's most beautiful shop, Acqua di Colonia โฌ45).
