Italians care about how they look โ and they notice how you look. Here's how to blend in without packing your entire wardrobe.
Plan your Italy trip โItalians dress slightly better than the occasion requires. What Americans wear to a nice dinner, Italians wear to the grocery store. You don't need to be a fashion model โ just avoid looking like you're headed to the gym or the beach when you're walking through a city center.
Shoes: This is where Italians judge hardest. Clean sneakers are fine (white leather sneakers are very Italian). Running shoes with bright neon stripes: tourist uniform. Sandals with socks: you'll be photographed for the wrong reasons. Comfortable walking shoes that don't scream "athletic" are perfect.
Pants/shorts: Chinos, linen pants, dark jeans all work. Cargo shorts and basketball shorts identify you as a tourist from 200 meters away. Tailored shorts (above-the-knee, solid color) are fine in summer.
Tops: Solid colors, simple patterns, cotton or linen. A polo shirt, a simple button-down with rolled sleeves, a plain quality t-shirt. Avoid: team jerseys, graphic tees with slogans, oversized anything.
Sundresses, linen pants, wrap skirts, simple blouses โ Italian women make effortless elegance look easy. The key: natural fabrics, muted or classic colors, minimal accessories that look intentional. A silk scarf, quality sunglasses, and simple leather sandals elevate anything.
Italian summers are HOT (35-40ยฐC in Rome, Florence, Southern Italy). Dress for heat but with some style: linen, cotton, light colors, breathable fabrics. Layers for evening โ temperatures drop and restaurants/churches are air-conditioned.
