Slightly overrated — but genuinely beautiful
The harbour is as pretty as the photos. The problem is that "visiting Portofino" takes about 90 minutes, costs a fortune, and most people leave thinking "is that it?" The surrounding area (Camogli, Santa Margherita) is better value.
What's real
The harbour is genuinely photogenic. The walk to the lighthouse through Mediterranean gardens is lovely. The water is crystal clear. And the boat ride from Camogli is scenic.
What's overrated
The village itself — there's nothing to do beyond one walk and one expensive drink. The prices — €15 coffee, €25 focaccia, €200 harbour-view lunch. The crowds — day-trippers pack the tiny piazza. And the celebrity factor — you won't see anyone famous at the harbour café.
Better alternative
Base in Camogli (15 min by boat) — it's a real fishing village with affordable restaurants, a proper beach, and the same Ligurian charm at a third of the price. Day-trip to Portofino for the photo.
Bottom line
Portofino isn't a scam — it's genuinely pretty. But it's a 90-minute visit, not a destination. Go to Camogli and take the boat over.
