ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is coming. Once active, citizens of visa-exempt countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and 57 others) will need to apply ONLINE before traveling to Italy (and any Schengen country). Cost: โฌ7. Valid: 3 years. Processing: minutes to 72 hours. It is NOT a visa. It's a pre-screening system similar to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA. Your Italian trip is not in danger โ but you'll need one more step before boarding. Full entry requirements โ
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers entering the Schengen Area (26 European countries including Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Greece, etc.). Purpose: Security screening โ linking passenger data to European security databases BEFORE arrival (currently, these checks happen at the border or not at all). It is NOT a visa: No interview. No embassy visit. No documents to submit (just passport info). No biometrics. Online application only. Model: Similar to the US ESTA (for travelers to the USA) and Canadian eTA.
Citizens of 60 visa-exempt countries including: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Israel, UAE, and others. EU/EEA citizens do NOT need ETIAS (they have freedom of movement). Citizens who already need a Schengen visa (India, China, Russia, etc.) do NOT need ETIAS โ they apply for a visa instead.
1. Go to the official ETIAS website (etias.ec.europa.eu โ NOT third-party sites that charge โฌ50-70). 2. Fill out the online form (personal info, passport details, travel history, health/security questions). 3. Pay โฌ7 (credit/debit card โ free for travelers under 18 and over 70). 4. Receive approval (most within minutes; maximum 72 hours; rare cases up to 30 days if additional checks needed). 5. ETIAS is linked electronically to your passport โ no printed document needed. Airlines check at boarding. Border agents check at arrival.
Valid: 3 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first). Multiple entries: Unlimited entries during validity. Stay limit: 90 days in any 180-day period (same as current visa-free rules โ the Schengen clock). Status (2026): ETIAS has been announced but its launch date has been postponed multiple times. Check etias.ec.europa.eu for the current activation date before your trip. As of early 2026, it may or may not be active โ monitor the official site, not travel blogs with outdated info. WARNING: Scam websites impersonating ETIAS charge โฌ50-70 for an application that costs โฌ7. ONLY use etias.ec.europa.eu.
