Italy has 7,600 kilometers of coastline. The best parts โ the hidden coves, the sea caves, the volcanic island anchorages, the cliffs that glow at sunset โ are accessible only by water. A boat doesn't fight traffic on the SS163 Amalfitana. A boat doesn't queue for Cinque Terre trains. A boat anchors in a Sardinian cove where the water is transparent, the sand is pink, and the nearest human is on the next boat. You don't need to own a yacht. You need a day charter (โฌ150-400 for a group of 4-8) or a skippered week (โฌ1,500-4,000 split between friends).
Plan my sailing trip โ1. Maddalena Archipelago (Sardinia) โ pink granite islands, emerald water, wild coves. The most beautiful sailing in the Mediterranean. Charter from Olbia or Palau.
2. Aeolian Islands (Sicily) โ volcanic islands, Stromboli erupting at night, Vulcano's hot springs. Charter from Milazzo or Lipari.
3. Amalfi Coast โ Positano, Capri, Ravello from the sea. Skip the road entirely. Day boats from Sorrento or Salerno (โฌ150-250/group).
4. Cinque Terre โ see all 5 villages from the water without hiking or trains. Boat tours from Santa Margherita or La Spezia (โฌ30-50/person).
5. Pontine Islands (Rome's secret islands) โ Ponza and Ventotene: 1h ferry from Terracina/Formia. Volcanic sea stacks, Roman ruins underwater, restaurants in sea caves. The islands Romans escape to and tourists don't know about.
