Night trains are back. Italy's Intercity Notte connects north and south overnight — Rome→Sicily, Milan→Sicily, Turin→Lecce. Sleep in a berth at 10pm, wake up at 7am in a different region. Cost: €30-80 (less than a hotel night). The train even goes ON A FERRY across the Strait of Messina — the carriages are physically loaded onto a ship. All train types →
Intercity Notte (Trenitalia): 1. Roma→Palermo/Siracusa (11-12h): Depart Rome 9-10pm → wake in Sicily 7-8am. The train crosses the Strait of Messina ON A FERRY — the carriages are detached, rolled onto a ship, sailed across, and reattached on the Sicilian side. If you're awake at 4am: the crossing is spectacular. 2. Milano→Palermo/Siracusa (14-16h): Depart Milan evening → arrive Sicily morning. Via Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples. 3. Roma→Lecce (7-8h): Depart late evening → arrive Puglia early morning. 4. Torino/Milano→Lecce (10-12h). 5. Roma→Reggio Calabria (6-7h): Gateway to the Strait of Messina ferry to Sicily.
Posti a Sedere (seats): Reclining seats — the cheapest option. €20-35. Not comfortable for sleeping unless you're 20 and exhausted. Cuccette (couchettes): 6-berth compartment: 3 bunks on each side, narrow but FLAT. Sheets and pillow provided. €30-50. 4-berth compartment: More space. €40-60. Vagoni Letto (sleeping cars): Single or double cabins with real beds, washbasin, mirror, and (in Excelsior class) private shower + toilet. Single: €60-100. Double: €80-130. Excelsior: €100-160.
Book on: trenitalia.com or Trainline. Book 2-4 weeks ahead for berths (they sell out, especially in summer). What to bring: Earplugs (ESSENTIAL — Italian trains are noisy). Eye mask. Snacks (no restaurant car on most Intercity Notte — bring panini + water). Phone charger (outlets in berths). Flip-flops for the bathroom. Security: Lock your compartment from inside (all berths have a lock). Keep valuables in your bag under your pillow. The Messina crossing: If you're on the Sicily train, set an alarm for ~3:30-4am — the ferry crossing takes 30 minutes and the views of the Strait (lit by fishing boats using lampare lights) are worth losing sleep for. Pro tip: Night trains SAVE you a hotel night AND transit time. Milan→Sicily by day = 11h sitting. By night = 11h sleeping. You lose 0 vacation hours and save €50-100 on a hotel.
