Pliny the Elder had two villas here. Liszt composed here. Bellini set his operas here. Stendhal called it "the most beautiful place in the world." George Clooney bought a villa and never left. Lake Como has been seducing human beings for over 2,000 years with the same trick: a Y-shaped lake of impossible blue, cradled by mountains that rise straight from the waterline, dotted with gardens that bloom twelve months a year because the microclimate is Mediterranean even though you're in the Alps. This is not a place that needs your approval. It already knows what it is.
Plan my Como trip โComo is shaped like an inverted Y. The southwestern branch ends at Como town (easy train from Milan, 40 min). The southeastern branch ends at Lecco (industrial, skip it). The center point where the Y meets โ the promontory of Bellagio โ is the most famous and most beautiful spot. The eastern shore (Varenna, Bellano) is quieter, cheaper, and often more beautiful than the western shore. The western shore (Cernobbio, Tremezzo, Menaggio) has the grand villas and the road to Switzerland.
Morning โ Varenna. Train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (1 hour, โฌ7.60, the most scenic train ride in Lombardy โ sit on the left). Varenna is what Bellagio was 30 years ago: a tiny fishing village of pastel houses cascading to the water, without the tour groups. Walk the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Walk) โ a narrow lakeside path carved into the cliff, cantilevered over the water, connecting the village to the main beach. It takes 5 minutes and it is absurdly romantic.
10:00am โ Castello di Vezio. Hike up from Varenna (20 min, steep) to this ruined medieval tower. The view from the top is the single best panorama on Lake Como โ you see all three branches of the Y, Bellagio's promontory, and the mountains fading into the distance. There are falconry shows in summer. โฌ4 entry.
11:30am โ Villa Monastero. โฌ10 garden entry. A former Cistercian convent turned aristocratic villa with a garden that stretches 2km along the lakeshore. Citrus trees, wisteria tunnels, statuary, and the water lapping below. The botanical collection includes species from every Mediterranean climate zone โ a product of Como's microclimate where palms grow next to alpine flowers.
1:30pm โ Ferry to Bellagio (15 minutes, โฌ4.60). Approach from the water: the town rises from the harbor in a triangle of terracotta roofs and cypress trees. Bellagio from the ferry is one of Italy's defining views.
Bellagio. Walk the stepped lanes of the old town (Salita Serbelloni is the main spine โ elegant shops, gelaterias, silk stores). Visit Villa Melzi Gardens (โฌ8, lakefront Japanese garden with water lilies and azaleas) or the grander Villa Serbelloni Gardens (guided tour only, 11:30am & 3:30pm, โฌ10, run by the Rockefeller Foundation). Then walk to Punta Spartivento โ the very tip of Bellagio's promontory, where the two branches of the lake diverge. Sit on the rocks, watch the ferries cross, and understand why Pliny chose this exact spot for his villa 2,000 years ago.
Cheaper than Bellagio, more authentic, direct train from Milan. Hotels โฌ80-180/night. Hotel du Lac (lakefront terrace, โฌ120) is the sweet spot.
The famous one. Beautiful but crowded during the day (cruise ship groups arrive 10am-4pm). Hotels โฌ120-400/night. Stay overnight โ Bellagio at 7am and 9pm is a different universe.
Como town itself is underwhelming. It's the transport hub, not the destination. The Duomo is nice, the funicular to Brunate (โฌ6 return, panoramic views) is worth doing if you're there, but don't base yourself in Como town if you have other options. Take the train one stop further to Varenna or the ferry to Bellagio.
Villa del Balbianello (Lenno, western shore) is where Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II were filmed. โฌ10 villa entry + โฌ7 garden only. Access by boat (โฌ7 from Lenno dock, 5 min) or a 1km trail through olive groves on Tuesdays and weekends. The garden terraces overlooking the lake are the most photographed spot on Como โ arrive at opening (10am) to have it to yourself.
From Pliny's writings to last season's restaurant openings โ deep research distilled into your personal itinerary.
