Peschiera del Garda — UNESCO fortified town + Gardaland (Italy's largest theme park, €44, 37 rides). Lazise — medieval walls, thermal park (Parco Termale del Garda, €25), Canevaworld water park.
Salò — elegant town, longest lakefront promenade (600m), Mussolini's puppet republic HQ (1943-45). Gardone Riviera — Vittoriale degli Italiani (D'Annunzio's extravagant villa-museum, €18, bizarre + magnificent). Limone sul Garda — the postcard town. Lemon terraces (limonaie — 18th century greenhouses on cliff terraces), pastel waterfront, the most photographed spot on the lake. Tignale + Tremosine — cliff-edge villages above the lake. Malcesine — Scaliger castle + cable car to Monte Baldo (1,760m, €25 return, panoramic rotating cabin). Paragliding from the summit (€120-150, tandem). The most dramatic single experience on the lake. Torri del Benaco — quiet fishing village, lemon house museum, olive oil. Garda town — the town the lake is named after, pretty waterfront, boat trips.
Riva del Garda — the adventure capital. Windsurfing + kitesurfing (thermal wind ora blows every afternoon), climbing, mountain biking, the Ponale trail (walking/cycling path cut into the cliff face above the lake — the most scenic trail on Garda). Nago-Torbole — windsurfing mecca, colored houses, Goethe stayed here.
From Verona: 30 min to south shore (Peschiera, train €4). From Milan: 1.5h to Desenzano (Frecciarossa). From Venice: 2h to Peschiera. Around the lake: Ferries connect all shores (Navigazione Lago di Garda, day pass €28-34). Car: The Gardesana road (western shore) is stunning but narrow and congested in summer.
