According to Catholic tradition, the Santa Casa (Holy House) inside the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto is the actual house from Nazareth where Mary lived and where the Archangel Gabriel announced the Incarnation. Tradition says angels transported the house from Nazareth to Dalmatia (1291) and then to Loreto (1294) to save it from Muslim conquest. Historical evidence suggests Crusader-era nobles (the Angeli family — "angeli" means "angels") brought the stones by ship. Regardless of how it arrived, the small stone structure inside the basilica has been a pilgrimage destination for 700 years, and the basilica built around it (Bramante, Giuliano da Sangallo, 15th-16th century) is one of the finest Renaissance churches in Italy. The Basilica: A Renaissance-Baroque church of cathedral proportions. The Sacristy of San Marco has Melozzo da Forlì frescoes (angels — among the finest Renaissance ceiling paintings). The Sacristy of San Giovanni has Luca Signorelli frescoes. The Museo-Antico Tesoro: Lorenzo Lotto paintings (he spent his last years in Loreto and is buried here), Renaissance tapestries, and liturgical objects. €5.
