Malcesine is the east shore's most picturesque town: a Scaliger castle on a cliff above the lake, a compact medieval centro of narrow lanes and harbor, and the cable car to Monte Baldo (1,760m) that gives the single most spectacular panorama on Lake Garda — the entire lake visible from the summit, with the Dolomites behind and the Po Valley fading south. Goethe visited in September 1786 (during his Italienische Reise — Italian Journey) and was arrested by suspicious locals who thought his sketches of the castle were espionage.
