Manarola — the Cinque Terre village that every travel poster uses

If you've seen one image of Cinque Terre, it's Manarola. The cluster of colored houses stacked on a cliff above the harbor, the terraced vineyards rising behind them, the Mediterranean below — this is THE postcard. But Manarola earns its fame beyond the photo: it's the Cinque Terre village with the best Sciacchetrà (SHAH-keh-trah), a sweet dessert wine made from grapes dried on the terraces for 3 months, produced in tiny quantities (a few hundred bottles per year), available only locally (€5-8/glass at Nessun Dorma bar — the bar with the most famous view in the Cinque Terre, arrive before 5pm or forget about a table). At Christmas, 15,000 lights create the world's largest nativity scene on the hillside above the village (Dec-Jan, free, visible from the harbor). The Via dell'Amore (cliffside walk to Riomaggiore, 20 min) reopened in 2024 after 12 years of closure — €10, timed entry.

The sunset rule: Manarola faces west-southwest. Sunset turns the houses gold, then orange, then pink. The view from the cemetery path above the village (free, 5 min walk) is the best sunset viewpoint in the Cinque Terre. Arrive 30 min before sunset.
