On January 11, 1693, the most powerful earthquake in Italian history destroyed 70 towns in eastern Sicily. Noto was leveled. Rather than rebuild on the rubble, the Sicilians chose a NEW SITE 10km away and designed an ENTIRE CITY from scratch in the Baroque style of the moment. The result: the most UNIFIED Baroque cityscape in Europe — every building, every church, every palazzo built between 1693 and 1750 in warm golden limestone (pietra calcarea) that turns HONEY-COLORED in afternoon light and AMBER at sunset. UNESCO listed the entire Val di Noto (Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Scicli, Catania, Caltagirone, Militello, Palazzolo) in 2002. Noto is the crown.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele: The main east-west axis — 500m of Baroque facades, 3 piazzas, each wider than the last (Piazza Immacolata, Piazza Municipio, Piazza XVI Maggio). Walk it at 5pm when the golden stone catches the western sun. Cattedrale di San Nicolò (1694-1776): The dome collapsed in 1996 and was rebuilt by 2007 — a REMINDER that Noto’s beauty is structurally precarious. Climb the bell tower for rooftop views. Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata: The balconies are supported by SCULPTED figures — lions, cherubs, horses, mermaids, sphinxes. The most photographed balconies in Sicily. Chiesa di Santa Chiara (Gagliardi): Oval plan, stucco interior, the purest Baroque interior in Noto.
May (3rd Sunday): the Infiorata — Via Nicolaci is covered with FLOWER PETAL CARPETS. Artists design images using millions of petals (roses, carnations, marigolds) on the street surface. The entire street becomes a painting made of flowers that lasts 24 hours.
