Offida is a borgo of 5,000 residents in the Piceno hills of southern Marche, known for three things: tombolo lace (bobbin lace, made on cushions with pins and bobbins — the women of Offida sit on their doorsteps making it, and the tradition is documented since the 15th century), Pecorino wine (a white grape — NOT the cheese — rediscovered in the 1990s after near-extinction, now Offida DOCG, producing crisp, mineral whites), and the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca — a Romanesque-Gothic church on a rocky spur at the edge of town, with a crypt containing 14th-century frescoes by the Maestro di Offida.
