Caravaggio — Judith Beheading Holofernes (1599). Room 20. The most viscerally violent painting Caravaggio produced. Judith's face: determined but slightly disgusted. Holofernes: mid-scream, blood spraying. The maid: holding a basket for the head, expression blank. The diagonal composition pulls you into the violence. Raphael — La Fornarina. Room 16. Raphael's lover Margherita Luti, topless, wearing an armband inscribed "RAPHAEL URBINAS." The most intimate portrait Raphael ever painted. He kept it in his studio until his death. Hans Holbein — Henry VIII (1540). Full-length portrait of the king in gold and fur. Pietro da Cortona — Triumph of Divine Providence (Grand Salon ceiling, 1632-39) — one of the great Baroque ceiling paintings, a swirling composition of 100+ figures that makes you dizzy looking up.
