The Reggia di Venaria Reale is the most visited cultural site in Piemonte — and one of the most impressive royal palaces in Europe. Built from 1659 as a Savoy hunting lodge, expanded by Filippo Juvarra in the 1710s-1720s into a palatial complex, abandoned, used as military barracks for 200 years, and then SPECTACULARLY restored (2007, €300 million — the largest restoration project in European history). The result: a palace that combines Baroque grandeur (the Galleria di Diana — 80m of white stucco, light, and perspective) with cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions, and gardens that stretch from the palace to the hills. UNESCO listed the Savoy Residences (including Venaria) in 1997. Venaria is 10km from Turin — 20 minutes by bus.

Designed by Juvarra (1718-21) as a celebration of the goddess Diana (hunting was the palace's original purpose). The effect is overwhelming — pure Baroque light and space. Juvarra's Grand Staircase (Scala di Juvariana): A monumental double staircase that plays with perspective — as you ascend, the windows seem to multiply and the space expands. Juvarra was the greatest Baroque architect in Italy after Bernini. Chapel of Sant'Uberto: Juvarra's masterpiece within the palace — a Greek-cross plan chapel with soaring dome and theatrical light effects. 60 hectares of formal and landscape gardens — restored and expanded in 2007. The Giardino Basso (lower garden) is geometric Baroque (modeled on Versailles' Le Nôtre tradition). The Potager Royal (kitchen garden) grows heritage varieties. The Fontana del Cervo (Stag Fountain) is the centerpiece — a spectacular water feature. The Parco Alto extends into the hills with walking/cycling paths. In spring (April-May): The gardens are at their peak — tulips, wisteria, blooming borders. The gardens alone justify the visit on a sunny day.
