1. Pincio Terrace (above Piazza del Popolo): FREE. The classic Rome sunset. St. Peter's dome centered in the frame, the piazza below, the sky turning pink. Arrive 45 min before sunset for a spot at the railing. 2. Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill): FREE. The WIDEST panorama — all of Rome spread below, from the Colosseum to St. Peter's to the Apennines beyond. The noon cannon fires daily (a tradition since 1847). 3. Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden, Aventine): FREE. A small garden with a terrace framing St. Peter's dome through umbrella pines. More intimate than Pincio. Walk there via Knights of Malta keyhole first.
4. Knights of Malta Keyhole (Aventine): FREE. Look through the keyhole of the green door: St. Peter's dome perfectly framed through a tunnel of hedges. 3 sovereign states in one glance. 5. Cupola di San Pietro (St. Peter's Dome): €8-10 (elevator+stairs or all stairs). 551 steps to the top. The most INTIMATE view — you're so close to the dome tiles you can touch them. 6. Vittoriano Terrace (Altare della Patria): €7 elevator. 360° panorama from Rome's most controversial building. The view includes the Forum, the Colosseum, and every major church dome.
7. Castel Sant'Angelo terrace: €15 (included in museum entry). The angel statue, the Tiber below, St. Peter's dome behind. 8. Terrazza delle Quadrighe (Palazzo delle Esposizioni rooftop): FREE during exhibitions. Via Nazionale, overlooking Quirinale. 9. Villa Borghese gardens: FREE. Multiple viewpoints — the Temple of Aesculapius on the lake, the Pincio terrace, the Casino del Lago. 10. Parco Savello (another name for the Orange Garden — approach from Via di Santa Sabina for the quiet entrance).
11. Parco degli Acquedotti at sunset: FREE. Roman aqueducts silhouetted against the sunset, sheep grazing, the city in the distance. The most CINEMATIC Rome view — this is the Rome Fellini filmed. Metro A to Giulio Agricola, 10 min walk. 12. Hotel rooftop bars: Hotel Minerva (Pantheon dome at eye level, €13-16 cocktail), Terrazza Borromini (Piazza Navona from above), Aroma (Colosseum view, €18 cocktails). The price of the drink includes the view. Worth it once.
