Rome neighborhoods — because eating carbonara in the wrong part of town costs €10 more and tastes €10 worse

Rome is 22 rioni (historic districts) and each one is a personality. Monti is the hipster with vintage shops. Trastevere is the loud, beautiful friend everyone follows. Testaccio is the chef who doesn't Instagram but cooks the best meal of your life. Where you stay, eat, and drink in Rome matters more than WHAT you see — because the Colosseum looks the same from every angle, but carbonara at Roscioli vs carbonara near the Trevi Fountain is the difference between religion and fast food.

The neighborhood map

Monti — Rome's hippest rione. Vintage shops, wine bars, Piazza Madonna dei Monti (aperitivo on the fountain steps). Best for: couples, solo travelers, first-timers who want walkable access to Colosseum + nightlife. Stay: boutique B&Bs €80-150. Eat: Ai Tre Scalini, La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali.

Trastevere — ivy-covered alleys, live music, the loudest neighborhood at night. Best for: nightlife, atmosphere, the "movie Rome" experience. Warning: overcrowded in summer, tourist trap restaurants on the main piazza — eat on SIDE STREETS. Stay: €90-180. Eat: Da Enzo al 29 (book ahead), Tonnarello, Nannarella.

Testaccio — the real food neighborhood. Testaccio Market, Flavio al Velavevodetto, street art on Monte Testaccio. Best for: serious food lovers, locals-not-tourists experience. Stay: €70-120. Eat: EVERYTHING HERE.

Jewish Quarter (Ghetto) — the oldest Jewish community in Europe (since 161 BC). Carciofi alla giudia (fried artichoke, the neighborhood dish). Portico d'Ottavia ruins. Best for: history + food, central location. Stay: €100-200. Eat: Nonna Betta, Ba'Ghetto, supplì at every corner.

Prati — the elegant neighborhood near the Vatican. Wide boulevards, bourgeois apartments, good restaurants at non-tourist prices. Best for: families, Vatican access, quiet evenings. Stay: €90-170. Eat: Pizzarium Bonci, Sciascia Caffè.

Centro Storico (Pantheon/Navona/Trevi) — the ancient heart. Walk-everywhere location. Warning: most expensive, noisiest, worst restaurant-to-tourist ratio. Best for: first visit if you prioritize walkability over authenticity. Eat: NEVER within 2 blocks of a monument. Pigneto — Rome's Brooklyn. Street art, craft beer, international restaurants, Pasolini's neighborhood. Best for: young travelers, alternative scene. Stay: €50-90.

The guru rule: Stay in Monti or Testaccio. Eat in Testaccio or Jewish Quarter. Drink in Monti or Trastevere. Walk everywhere else. Never eat within sight of a monument.
