How to watch the Palio di Siena — free in the piazza or paid in the stands

Watching from the centre of Piazza del Campo is free. You stand for 4–5 hours in summer heat, packed among 30,000 people, with no bathroom, no shade, and no possibility of leaving once you’re in. It’s the best experience in Italy.

Free: the piazza centre

Enter through designated gates from ∼2pm (gates close at ∼5pm — once full, you’re out). Arrive by 1–2pm for a decent spot. Earlier is better. Bring: water (1–2 liters), hat, sunscreen, snacks. No umbrellas, no glass bottles. There are no toilets inside. The crowd is standing-only. You cannot leave and re-enter. The race itself lasts 90 seconds; the waiting lasts 5 hours. Worth every second.

Paid: balcony/window seats

Grandstand seats (palchi): €300–600+ per seat. Reserved for contrada members and VIPs. Extremely hard to get. Balcony/window seats: buildings around the piazza rent windows/balconies for €200–1,000 per person. Book through agencies (PalioViaggi, SienaPalio.com) 3–6 months ahead. Restaurant terraces: some restaurants on the piazza offer meal + viewing packages (€300–500). Book 6+ months ahead.

Best free viewing spots

Near the start/finish line (Mossa): most exciting, hardest to get. Near San Martino curve: where most falls happen (dramatic but dangerous — mattresses added). Anywhere on the inner rail: you’ll see the race. The emotion is the same everywhere.
