In 1565, Cosimo I de' Medici needed to walk from Palazzo Vecchio (his office) to Palazzo Pitti (his home) without being seen — or assassinated — on the street. He hired Giorgio Vasari, who built a 1km enclosed elevated corridor in 5 MONTHS. The Corridoio Vasariano runs from the Uffizi, OVER the Ponte Vecchio (above the shops — the butchers were replaced with goldsmiths because Cosimo complained about the smell), across the river, through a church (with windows so the Medici could watch Mass without being in the congregation), and into Palazzo Pitti. The route: Enter from the Uffizi (eastern end). Walk through the corridor above the Arno. Cross OVER Ponte Vecchio (look down through circular windows at the river and the shops below). Pass through Santa Felicita church (the Medici viewing balcony is visible). Exit at Palazzo Pitti/Boboli Gardens. The art: The corridor houses the Uffizi's self-portrait collection — 1,600+ self-portraits from the 16th century to today (Raphael, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Rubens, Chagall, Ai Weiwei). The views: Windows along the corridor frame the Arno, the bridges, the hills of Oltrarno. The experience: Walking where the Medici walked, above the city, in private, seeing Florence from an angle only dynastic power could afford.
