Venice has 6 sestieri (neighborhoods). Most tourists experience one: San Marco. Then they say "Venice is a tourist trap." San Marco IS a tourist trap. The other 5 sestieri are not. Dorsoduro has the Guggenheim and quiet canals. Cannaregio has the Jewish Ghetto and locals' wine bars. Castello has residential streets where laundry dries over canals and children play football in campi. San Polo has the Rialto Market and the oldest bacari. Santa Croce has the station and... not much else (sorry, Santa Croce). Where you stay determines which Venice you experience.

Stay: only if budget is no concern (€200-600/night). After 9pm: empties dramatically. The piazza at midnight with the orchestra playing to 20 people: magic. Verdict: see it day 1, then leave it.
DORSODURO — The art + university quarter. Peggy Guggenheim, Gallerie dell'Accademia, Cantinone Già Schiavi, Punta della Dogana view. University students keep the bars affordable (Spritz €5 at Campo Santa Margherita). Hotels €100-200. Best for: couples, art lovers, repeat visitors. Zattere waterfront for gelato + Giudecca sunsets.
CANNAREGIO — The local + historic quarter. The Jewish Ghetto (world's first, 1516). Fondamenta della Misericordia bars. Trattoria dalla Marisa. The least touristy sestiere accessible by vaporetto. Hotels €80-150. Best for: budget, authenticity, nightlife. Our Day 2 guide focuses here →
CASTELLO — The residential east. Via Garibaldi (widest street, local market), Arsenale (the medieval shipyard that built Venice's navy — 16,000 workers), Biennale gardens. The Venice where Venetians live. Hotels €70-130. Best for: long stays, quiet seekers, Biennale visitors.
SAN POLO — The market + food heart. Rialto Fish Market, All'Arco + Do Mori + Do Spade bacari. Rialto Bridge (touristy but unavoidable). Hotels €100-180. Best for: foodies, first-timers who want centrality without San Marco prices.
SANTA CROCE — The gateway. Around the train station and Piazzale Roma (car terminal). Less character than other sestieri. Hotels €60-120. Best for: arrivals/departures, budget. Not a destination — a transit point.
