Venosa โ€” where Horace was born, a Norman abbey was never finished, Roman ruins and Jewish catacombs coexist underground, and the wine (Aglianico) is magnificent

Venosa (ancient Venusia) is the most historically layered small town in Basilicata. The Roman poet Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus, 65 BC) was born here. The Parco Archeologico preserves a Roman amphitheater, thermal baths, and residential blocks. Below ground: early Christian and Jewish catacombs (the Jewish community was significant โ€” menorah carvings survive). Above ground: the Abbazia della Trinità โ€” two churches, one completed (11th century, with Robert Guiscard's tomb) and one "Incompiuta" (unfinished) โ€” a massive Norman-Romanesque nave that was started in the 12th century, abandoned, and stands roofless as one of the most atmospherically powerful ruins in southern Italy. The Frederick II castle (15th century Aragonese on Swabian foundations) houses the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. And all of this in a town of 12,000 people surrounded by Aglianico del Vulture vineyards. Basilicata →

What to see

Abbazia della SS. Trinità: Two churches side by side. The Chiesa Antica (11th century, completed) has the tomb of Robert Guiscard (the Norman conqueror of southern Italy, d.1085) and beautiful Romanesque carved capitals. The Chiesa Incompiuta (12th century, unfinished) โ€” massive columns, half-built walls, open to the sky. Roman and early medieval spolia (reused stones) are built into the walls. The effect of the unfinished nave โ€” ambition frozen mid-gesture โ€” is haunting. €5. Parco Archeologico: Roman amphitheater (1st century AD, partially excavated), thermal baths, domus. The Jewish and Christian catacombs (accessed via the park) have carved menorahs, inscriptions in Hebrew and Latin. Castello Pirro del Balzo / Museo Archeologico: Displays from Roman Venusia โ€” mosaics, sculpture, inscriptions, and the famous Tavole di Eraclea (bronze tablets with Greek and Roman legal texts). €5.
