Vermentino grows across the Mediterranean โ Liguria, Corsica, Provence, Sardinia โ but the finest, most structured, most age-worthy expressions come from the Gallura, the granite hill country of northeast Sardinia between Olbia and Tempio Pausania. The combination of decomposed granite soil (poor, acidic, mineral-rich), constant wind from the mistral (keeping the grapes healthy and concentrated), and scorching Sardinian sun produces a white wine of unusual power: aromatic (citrus, white peach, Mediterranean herbs), saline (you can taste the sea), and with enough structure to age 3-5 years. Vermentino di Gallura earned Sardinia's only DOCG in 1996, and the best examples rival Chablis for precision and minerality at a quarter of the price. Sardinia guide →
Plan my Sardinia trip →Capichera (Arzachena): The benchmark estate โ the Capichera Classico is textbook Gallura Vermentino, and the Vendemmia Tardiva (late harvest) is extraordinary. Beautiful granite-walled estate near the Costa Smeralda. €15-30 tasting. Surrau (Arzachena): Modern winery with dramatic architecture (carved into granite), excellent visitor experience, restaurant on-site. Their Sciala Vermentino is outstanding. €15-25. Cantina Gallura (Tempio Pausania): Cooperative producing excellent value Vermentino โ the Canayli is consistently good at €8-12. Visitor-friendly, €10-15 tasting. Piero Mancini, Masone Mannu, Vigne Surrau: All worth visiting for serious Vermentino exploration.
Gallura wine zone: northeast Sardinia between Olbia and Tempio Pausania. Getting there: Olbia airport (easy โ Ryanair, easyJet). Car essential for winery visits. Prices retail: Vermentino di Gallura DOCG €8-18, Superiore €12-25. Pair with: Sardinian seafood โ fregola con arselle (pasta with clams), bottarga spaghetti, grilled lobster (aragosta alla catalana โ a Catalan-influenced Sardinian dish that's spectacular with Vermentino). Stay: Arzachena (€60-120), Tempio Pausania (€45-80 โ the cool, granite hilltop town), or the Costa Smeralda if budget allows (€150-500+ in summer). Combine with: Costa Smeralda (Arzachena is the gateway), La Maddalena archipelago (ferries from Palau), Cannonau wine (combine white and red Sardinia).
