Villa Oplontis belonged to Poppaea Sabina — Nero's second wife. Buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD (same eruption as Pompeii and Herculaneum), the villa was excavated in the 1960s-70s. The wall paintings are the best-preserved Roman frescoes in existence — better than Pompeii's, better than Herculaneum's, better than anything in Rome's museums. The frescoes (Second Style, 50-40 BC): Every room is painted with elaborate architectural illusions — columns, pediments, balconies, garden views — creating the illusion that the walls OPEN onto outdoor spaces. Room 14: A painted garden with pomegranate trees, birds, and a golden bowl — each pomegranate seed individually rendered. Room 23: A painted peacock (the villa's icon) — feathers in iridescent blue-green, each eye-spot detailed. The colors have survived because volcanic ash sealed them from air, light, and moisture for 1,900 years.
The swimming pool (piscina): 17m × 61m — surrounded by a peristyle colonnade. One of the largest private pools ever found in the Roman world. Poppaea's luxury: she reportedly bathed in donkey milk to preserve her complexion (Pliny the Elder reports this). The garden: Carbonized root channels have been used to replant the ancient garden — oleanders, plane trees, and citrus in the same positions as 79 AD.
