Where to Stay in Cinque Terre

The five villages are connected by train (4-8 min between each), so your base matters less than you think. But each village has a distinct personality.

Monterosso al Mare

Easiest, most amenitiesVibe

⭐⭐⭐⭐Walk score

Best for: Families, beach lovers, accessibility needs

The only village with a real beach and flat terrain. The most hotels, restaurants, and services. Easiest arrival with luggage. Less "picturesque" than the others but the most practical base.

Vernazza

Most photogenicVibe

⭐⭐⭐Walk score

Best for: Photographers, romantics, first-timers

The postcard village — a tiny harbour, colourful tower houses, and the best piazza for sunset drinks. Very limited accommodation (book months ahead). Steep stairs with luggage.

Manarola

Best views, wine cultureVibe

⭐⭐⭐Walk score

Best for: Couples, wine lovers, hikers

Clinging to the cliff with the most dramatic viewpoint in Cinque Terre. Excellent wine bars (local Sciacchetrà). The starting point for the Via dell'Amore (when open). Small and intimate.

Riomaggiore

Most local feelVibe

⭐⭐⭐⭐Walk score

Best for: Budget travellers, young couples, divers

The most "real" village — local bars, a rocky swimming cove, and less polish than Vernazza/Manarola. Good budget accommodation. The southern gateway to the park.

Corniglia

Quietest, on a hilltopVibe
Hotels
⭐⭐⭐Walk score

Best for: Hikers, solitude seekers, budget

The only village NOT on the water — perched on a cliff with 382 steps from the station (or a shuttle bus). The quietest, cheapest, and most authentic. No beach. Fewest tourists. Wonderful.

💡 Pro tip: Book accommodation 3-6 months ahead for summer (June-September). Cinque Terre has very limited rooms and fills completely. Vernazza and Manarola sell out first.

Our recommendation

Monterosso for ease, Vernazza for beauty, Riomaggiore for budget, Corniglia for solitude. If it's your first visit and you want the classic experience, choose Vernazza or Manarola.
