Where to stay in Sicily — the base-camp strategy: which town to sleep in depends on what you want to see, and driving distances matter more than hotel stars

Sicily is large (25,711 km²) — you can't see it from one base. The key decision: east or west? Eastern Sicily (Catania, Taormina, Syracuse, Etna) is more dramatic and easier to navigate. Western Sicily (Palermo, Cefalù, Trapani, Agrigento) is more culturally diverse and wilder. A 7-day trip needs 2 bases minimum (one east, one west). A 10-day trip can add a southern base (Val di Noto baroque towns). A car is essential outside Catania and Palermo — Sicilian public transport between major sights is poor.

🌋 EASTERN SICILY — The dramatic coast

Catania (budget + urban energy): The lava-black baroque city — the best base for Etna (30min), Taormina (1h), Syracuse (1h). Price: €40-100/night (the cheapest big city in Sicily). Character: Raw, intense, chaotic, the best street food. Best for: Budget travelers, food lovers, urbanites. Taormina (luxury + views): The cliff-top glamour town — Greek theater, Etna views, Corso boutiques, Isola Bella beach below. Price: €80-250/night (Sicily's most expensive town). Character: Elegant, international, touristy. Best for: Couples, luxury seekers. Drawback: Expensive, crowded in summer, parking nightmarish. Syracuse/Ortigia (charm + history): The Greek heritage capital — Ortigia island is a jewel (baroque, Greek temple-cathedral, waterfront dining). Price: €50-120/night. Character: Atmospheric, walkable, less chaotic than Catania. Best for: History lovers, couples, families. The best eastern base for charm-seekers.

🏛️ WESTERN SICILY — The cultural kaleidoscope

Palermo (culture + chaos): The Arab-Norman capital — Cappella Palatina, Ballarò market, street food, the most culturally complex city in Italy. Price: €35-90/night (cheap!). Character: Intense, loud, warm, overwhelming. Best for: Culture lovers, foodies, adventurous travelers. Base for: Monreale (8km), Cefalù (1h), Segesta (1h). Cefalù (beach + beauty): The postcard town — Norman cathedral, sandy beach, the Rocca cliff above. Price: €60-150/night. Character: Beautiful, relaxed, family-friendly. Best for: Families, beach+culture combo, photographers. Trapani (the western tip): Salt pans, Erice hilltop above, ferry to Egadi Islands (Favignana), Marsala nearby. Price: €40-80/night (great value). Best for: Off-the-beaten-path travelers, Egadi island-hoppers.

🏘️ SOUTHERN SICILY — Val di Noto baroque

For the baroque circuit (Noto, Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli) — the UNESCO towns rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Ragusa Ibla (the beauty base): The most atmospheric baroque town — stay IN Ibla (the lower town), walk the lanes, eat at Duomo restaurant (Michelin). €50-100/night. Noto (the elegant base): The golden limestone boulevard — the most photogenic baroque town. €50-110/night. Modica (the chocolate base): The canyon town — Modica chocolate (cold-processed, granular, Aztec-derived), baroque churches perched on cliffs. €40-80/night.
