Every autumn, the hills around Alba in Piedmont produce the Tuber magnatum Pico — the white truffle — the most expensive food on Earth. A good specimen sells for €3,000-5,000 per kilogram. Exceptional ones have fetched €100,000+ at charity auctions. The white truffle cannot be cultivated. It grows symbiotically with oak, hazel, and linden roots in specific soil conditions that science still doesn't fully understand.
