Albenga (ancient Albingaunum) is the most historically layered town on the Riviera di Ponente: Roman street grid still visible in the centro storico layout, a 5th-century Baptistery with blue-gold mosaics (the oldest surviving Early Christian monument in Liguria), three medieval towers creating a distinctive skyline, and the Museo Navale Romano (displaying the cargo of a 1st-century BC Roman trading ship found offshore — 10,000 amphorae, the largest Roman shipwreck find on the Ligurian coast).
