Aosta โ€” the "Rome of the Alps" with a complete Roman city grid at 583 meters, the Arch of Augustus, a theater, an amphitheater, and Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn visible from the city walls

Augusta Praetoria Salassorum (Aosta) was founded by Rome in 25 BC after defeating the Salassi, a Celtic Alpine tribe. The Roman city survives almost complete: the Arco d'Augusto (triumphal arch, 25 BC), the Porta Praetoria (double-arched city gate with the original Roman road visible), the Theater (the facade stands to full height), the Amphitheater (now partially enclosed within a convent), the Forum cryptoporticus (underground arcade), and the street grid (cardo and decumanus still define the modern streets). All this at 583 meters altitude, in a valley flanked by 4,000m peaks. The Collegiata di Sant'Orso (Romanesque cloister with 40 carved capitals โ€” some of the finest Romanesque sculpture in the Alps) and the Cathedral (two mosaic floors visible through glass panels) add medieval layers to the Roman base. From Aosta: Mont Blanc (Courmayeur 35min), the Matterhorn (Cervinia 50min), Gran Paradiso National Park (30min). Valle d'Aosta โ†’
