Arrampicata ad Arco โ€” the world capital of sport climbing, where 5,000 routes in the walls above Lake Garda make this paradise for anyone who grips rock

Arco, at the northern tip of Lake Garda, is the undisputed world capital of sport climbing. The limestone walls above the town hold over 5,000 documented routes across every grade, from beginner-friendly 4a slabs to the hardest multi-pitch routes in Europe. The RockMaster competition (held here since 1987) is one of the oldest and most prestigious climbing events in the world. The microclimate โ€” Lake Garda moderates the temperature year-round, so rock-climbing season extends from February to November โ€” and the concentration of crags within walking distance of good restaurants, gelaterias, and a medieval castle makes Arco the place where climbing culture and Mediterranean lifestyle intersect most perfectly. Where to climb

Beginners and intermediates: Massone (the crag literally above the town โ€” 200+ routes from 4a to 7a, south-facing, warm in winter, 10min walk from the piazza), Nago (west of Arco โ€” long easy routes with lake views), Corno di Bo (slabs, friendly grades). Experienced: Colodri (the striking limestone pillar above town โ€” multi-pitch routes on perfect rock, the Colodri NW Face is a classic), Padaro (steep, overhanging, powerful routes 7a-8c), Eremo di San Paolo (technical face climbing). Multi-pitch: Monte Brento (the 800m wall visible from the autostrada โ€” serious multi-pitch terrain), Monte Colt (classic long routes). Via Ferrata: Several via ferrate in the area for those who want exposed climbing with fixed cables (not free climbing).
