Saint Nicholas of Myra โ the 4th-century bishop whose generosity toward children became the legend of Santa Claus โ is buried in Bari. Not in Myra (modern Turkey). In Bari. In 1087, Barese sailors stole his relics from Myra and brought them to Puglia, where they were placed in a specially built basilica. The Basilica di San Nicola (1089-1197) was the first great Norman church in southern Italy โ its architecture influenced every Romanesque church built in Puglia afterward. The crypt, where the relics rest, is shared by both Catholic and Orthodox congregations โ Russian Orthodox pilgrims travel to Bari specifically for this. A Russian Orthodox chapel operates inside. Plan my Bari visit →The exterior: A fortress-church. Twin towers, minimal decoration, massive stone walls. Norman architecture is about POWER, not prettiness. The facade faces the sea โ visible to ships arriving in port. Interior: Three naves, a carved wooden ceiling (17th century), the Bishop's Throne (cathedra) of Archbishop Elia โ one of the finest Romanesque stone thrones in Italy, supported by carved figures of prisoners (symbolizing the triumph of faith over paganism). The ciborium: A 12th-century stone canopy over the altar, decorated with angels โ one of the oldest surviving in southern Italy.
The crypt: 28 columns support low vaults over the tomb of San Nicola. The reliquary altar is behind a gate but visible. The atmosphere is intense โ candles, incense, Orthodox icons, Catholic statuary, and pilgrims of both traditions praying side by side. The "manna di San Nicola": Every May 9, a clear liquid that seeps from the saint's relics is collected by the clergy and distributed to the faithful. Whatever you believe about relics, the tradition has continued unbroken since 1087.
