The Battistero Neoniano (or degli Ortodossi โ to distinguish it from the Arian Baptistery built later by the Ostrogoths) is Ravenna's oldest surviving monument โ built in the early 5th century, decorated with mosaics around 450 AD by Bishop Neon. The dome mosaic is ravishing: at the apex, Christ stands waist-deep in the Jordan River being baptized by John, with the Holy Spirit as a dove and a personified River Jordan watching from the bank. Around this central medallion, the twelve apostles process in a circular frieze, their robes alternating white and gold, carrying crowns. Below them: architectural illusionism โ painted stucco arches, prophets in niches, garden scenes. The building has sunk 3 meters over 1,600 years, so you descend steps to enter, creating the feeling of entering an underground treasury of light. Ravenna guide →
Plan my Ravenna trip →The central medallion โ Baptism of Christ: Christ stands naked in transparent water (the mosaic tesserae depict the water as glass-like, with fish swimming). John pours water from a patera (dish). The dove descends. The figure of the River Jordan โ an old man holding a cloth, emerging from the water โ is a classical personification that shows how Roman artistic traditions survived into Christian art. The apostle frieze: Twelve figures carrying crowns, alternating gold and white robes, processing clockwise. The movement is graceful and rhythmic. The lower registers: Stucco reliefs of prophets and architectural trompe-l'oeil โ less famous than the mosaics but beautifully preserved. The baptismal font (center of the floor): A large octagonal marble basin where early Christians were fully immersed.
