Belluno sits at 389 meters on a bluff above the confluence of the Piave and Ardo rivers, with the Dolomite peaks (Schiara group, Vette Feltrine) rising dramatically behind the city skyline. For 400 years it was part of the Venetian Republic, and the architecture shows it: the Piazza dei Martiri (the elegant main square, lined with cafés under porticoes), the Piazza del Duomo (with the Palazzo dei Rettori — the Venetian governor's palace — and a Baroque cathedral), and palazzi along Via Mezzaterra that would look at home on a Venetian campo. Nobody stops here. The road to Cortina bypasses the centro. The tourists are on the ski slopes.
