Feltre's centro storico is a Renaissance time capsule: after being sacked and burned in the War of the League of Cambrai (1509-10), the town was rebuilt by Venice in a coherent Renaissance style — Piazza Maggiore is entirely frescoed (palazzo facades painted with mythological scenes, architectural trompe-l'oeil, and Venetian symbols), the streets are lined with porticoed palazzi, and a Venetian fountain sits at the piazza's center. The town sits at 325 meters on a hill above the Piave valley, with the Vette Feltrine (Dolomiti Bellunesi) rising dramatically behind.
