The Dolomites are a 4-season destination โ each season transforms the landscape so completely that returning in a different season feels like visiting a different place. Summer (June-September): hiking, green meadows, wildflowers, rifugio culture. Autumn (October): golden larches, the shortest and most spectacular season. Winter (December-April): skiing the Dolomiti Superski. Spring (May): the quiet shoulder โ mountain roads opening, snow melting, few tourists. Where to stay โ
Plan my Dolomites visit โJune: Wildflower season โ the meadows of Alpe di Siusi and Val di Funes explode in color. Some high passes still snow-covered (dramatic contrast). Cable cars opening. Fewer crowds than July-August. Temperature: 15-25ยฐC valley, 5-15ยฐC high altitude. โ โ โ โ โ Our top pick for hiking. July-August: Peak season โ everything open, warm (20-30ยฐC valley), every rifugio serving lunch. Also: most crowded, most expensive, afternoon thunderstorms common (plan hikes to finish by 2pm). Book 2-3 months ahead. โ โ โ โ Great but busy. September: The golden shoulder โ warm days (15-22ยฐC), thinner crowds, the larches starting to turn gold. Late September begins the autumn color transition. โ โ โ โ โ Our pick for experienced hikers.
The shortest and most spectacular Dolomite season. For approximately 2 weeks (Oct 10-25 depending on altitude and weather), the European larches turn INTENSE GOLD against the grey Dolomite rock and deep blue sky. Val di Funes (the church with Odle peaks behind โ Italy's most photographed autumn scene), Lago di Braies (golden trees reflected in turquoise water), Alpe di Siusi (golden meadows, smoking chimneys from the huts). WARNING: Many rifugi and cable cars close mid-October. Check specific operation dates before planning. โ โ โ โ โ For photographers โ a once-in-a-lifetime window.
December: Ski season opens (snow cover varies โ artificial snow common). Christmas markets in Bolzano/Merano (30-60min drive). January-February: Best snow, cold (-5 to +5ยฐC valley), short days (sunset 4:30-5pm). The settimana bianca (white week โ Italian families' ski holiday) is usually in late January-February โ busiest period. March: Longer days (sunset 6pm), warmer, spring-skiing conditions (hard morning snow, soft afternoon). Excellent value โ fewer crowds, better weather than January. April: Late season โ lower altitudes closing, high altitude (Marmolada 3,342m, Arabba) still good. Ski guide โ
