August: AVOID — 30-35°C, maximum everything (crowds, prices, suffering). Ferragosto (Aug 15) = absolute peak. September: ★ THE BEST ★ — 24-28°C, water at peak warmth (25-26°C), crowds thinning, prices dropping, light golden. October: Still warm (19-24°C), water swimmable (22-23°C), low crowds, shoulder prices (30% below summer). Occasional rain. Excellent value. Nov-Dec: Cooling (9-17°C), many hotels close. But: Salerno Luci d'Artista Christmas lights (Italy's most spectacular) + Amalfi presepi nativity scenes.
Jan-Mar: €60-100 (many closed). Apr-May: €90-160. Jun: €130-220. Jul: €180-320. Aug: €250-500+ (minimum stay common). Sep: €140-250. Oct: €90-170. Nov-Dec: €60-110. The math: September week at €180/night = €1,260. August week at €350/night = €2,450. Same coast, nearly same weather — €1,190 difference.
Water temp: May 18-20°C (bracing), Jun 22-24°C (comfortable), Jul-Aug 25-27°C (perfect), Sep 25-26°C (THE warmest — sea retains summer heat), Oct 22-23°C (still pleasant). Best swimming month: September (warm water + fewer bodies). Note: beaches mostly pebble/rock — bring water shoes. Lido chairs: €15-25/day.
The SS163: Narrow, hairpin-filled, shared by buses/taxis/scooters/tourists. Apr-May + Oct: Manageable — 45min Sorrento→Positano. Jun-Sep: Slow — 1-1.5h. August: Gridlocked — 2h+ on weekends. Best overall: September (warm water, golden light, manageable crowds, dropping prices). Best value: October (everything September has, 30% cheaper, slightly cooler). Best for hiking: April-May (wildflowers, cool temps, Path of the Gods at its best). Best for budget travelers: Late October or late March/early April. Only visit in August if: you have no other option, you've booked 4+ months ahead, and you've made peace with crowds, heat, and premium prices.
