Borghetto sul Mincio โ€” the hamlet where medieval houses straddle a river, water mills still turn, and every June 10,000 people eat tortellini on a bridge by candlelight

Borghetto is a frazione (hamlet) of Valeggio sul Mincio, built where the Mincio river flows through a narrow passage beneath the massive Ponte Visconteo (a 14th-century fortified bridge-dam, 650 meters long). The hamlet sits IN the river: medieval houses are built on both banks and over the water, with mill wheels still turning in the current. The sound of flowing water is everywhere. The scale is tiny โ€” 100 meters of lane, a handful of restaurants, a church, and the watermills. The Festa del Nodo d'Amore (third Tuesday of June): A candlelit dinner on the Ponte Visconteo for 4,000 people eating tortellini di Valeggio (the local stuffed pasta, tied in a knot shape) โ€” one of the most romantic food events in Italy. What to see

The hamlet: Walk across the wooden bridge over the Mincio โ€” the mills are visible below, some still functioning. The houses grow from the river banks, their foundations in the water. The Ponte Visconteo (1393): Built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a military dam โ€” 650m long, with towers. It spans the valley above Borghetto and is one of the longest medieval bridges in Europe. Walk the top for views over the hamlet and valley. Tortellini di Valeggio: A local pasta โ€” small knots of thin egg pasta stuffed with meat, smaller and more delicate than Bologna's. Every restaurant in Borghetto and Valeggio serves them. €10-12 per plate. Parco Giardino Sigurtà (2km): One of Italy's most beautiful gardens โ€” 60 hectares of tulips (spring), roses, water gardens, and English-style parkland. €16. April-May for the tulips.
