Brisighella โ€” the borgo with three rock spires (tower, fortress, church), a raised medieval donkey street, and olive oil so good it has its own DOP and its own festival

Brisighella's silhouette is unmistakable: three gypsum rock pinnacles rise from a ridge, each crowned by a different structure โ€” the Torre dell'Orologio (clock tower, 13th century), the Rocca Manfrediana (fortress, 14th century), and the Santuario del Monticino (18th-century church). The village below has one of the most unusual streets in Italy: the Via degli Asini (Donkey Street) โ€” a raised, covered lane built into the cliff face at first-floor level, originally used for donkey traffic and defense, now a vaulted passage with irregular arches opening onto the valley. Brisighella produces some of the finest olive oil in Emilia-Romagna (Brisighella DOP โ€” from the Nostrana di Brisighella variety), and the annual Sagra del Tartufo e dell'Olio (November) is one of the best food festivals in Romagna. What to see

The three pinnacles: Climb all three for the panorama โ€” the Torre dell'Orologio (the clock tower, the most photogenic), the Rocca Manfrediana (Venetian fortress, small museum, €3), and the Santuario del Monticino (pilgrimage church with a Romagna landscape view from the terrace). Via degli Asini: A 200-meter raised street at first-floor level โ€” vaulted, with half-arched openings to the right revealing the valley. The arches are irregular (each was a different donkey stable or defense position). The centro storico: Piazza Marconi (the main square, with the Palazzo del Podestร ), medieval lanes, the thermal baths (Terme di Brisighella โ€” sulphur springs, €12-20/session). Olive oil: Cooperativa Agricola Brisighellese (buy Brisighella DOP oil directly, €12-18/liter) or at the oil festival.

Practical

Getting there: Brisighella station (Faenza-Florence line, 10min from Faenza). By car: 30min from Faenza, 1h from Bologna. Stay: €45-80/night. Sagra del Tartufo e dell'Olio (November weekends): Truffle and olive oil market, tastings, cooking demonstrations โ€” one of the best autumn food festivals in Emilia-Romagna. Combine with: Ravenna (30min โ€” mosaics), Faenza (10min โ€” ceramic capital of Romagna), Dozza (30min โ€” painted village), Bologna (1h).
