The 18th century was Venice's last act. The Republic was dying — politically irrelevant, militarily finished, economically declining. And yet: this was the century of Vivaldi, Goldoni, Canaletto, Guardi, Tiepolo, Longhi, and the most extravagant Carnival in European history. Venice partied as it sank. Ca' Rezzonico, a Longhena-designed palace on the Grand Canal, captures this gorgeous decadence. Tiepolo's ceiling frescoes (painted for the Rezzonico family, which produced Pope Clement XIII), Longhi's genre scenes of masked Venetians at card tables and puppet shows, Guardi's melancholy vedute of a city already becoming a memory, and ballrooms so ornate they make Versailles look restrained. The Rezzonico family spent more on this room than most Venetian families earned in a decade. Tiepolo ceilings: Giambattista Tiepolo's Allegory of Merit (1758) in the Throne Room — figures ascending into impossible skies of pink and blue. His son Giandomenico Tiepolo's New World frescoes (from the family's country villa) show masked Venetians and commedia dell'arte characters with a satirical edge. Pietro Longhi room: Small genre paintings of everyday 18th-century Venice — rhinoceros exhibitions, fortune tellers, morning chocolate, masked balls. These are Venetian Instagram posts from 1750.
