Cala Goloritzé — a 143m limestone needle, turquoise water so clear the pebbles look painted, and a 1-hour hike down because beauty should cost effort

Cala Goloritzé is a UNESCO-protected beach on Sardinia's east coast — and it might be the most beautiful beach in Italy. A cove at the base of 143m white limestone cliffs. The Aguglia (needle) — a 143m freestanding rock spire rising from the beach. Water so transparent that boats appear to FLOAT in air. No road access. No stabilimenti. No bars. You get there by hiking down from the Altopiano del Golgo (1h, 500m descent, moderate) or by boat from Cala Gonone/Santa Maria Navarrese. The effort is the filter. The filter is the magic.

Getting there

On foot (the REAL way): Drive to Altopiano del Golgo above Baunei (follow signs to "Cala Goloritzé trailhead"). Park (€5). The trail descends 500m through Mediterranean scrub and holm oak forest — 1h down, 1.5h up. Moderate difficulty but STEEP in sections. Bring water (none at the beach), shoes with grip, sun protection. By boat: From Cala Gonone (1h, €25-35 return) or Santa Maria Navarrese (40 min, €20-30). Boats anchor offshore — you swim to the beach. July-August: beach reaches capacity (max ~300 people, monitored).

The beach

White marble pebbles. Water: transparent turquoise, 15-20°C (refreshing, not warm). The Aguglia: The limestone spire is a world-class climbing destination — multi-pitch routes up the 143m needle. For non-climbers: look at it from the beach. It's absurd. A geological accident that looks designed. Snorkeling: Excellent — the clarity means you see 15-20m underwater. Fish, posidonia meadows, rock formations. No facilities: No water, no food, no toilets, no shade (bring your own). This is deliberate — UNESCO protection means the beach stays as nature made it.

Practical

From Baunei: 20 min drive to trailhead. From Cala Gonone: 1h boat. Best season: May-June, September-October (warm, fewer people). July-August: arrive by 9am for the hike or the beach fills. Combine: Cala Luna (by boat from Cala Gonone — another spectacular Golfo di Orosei cove). Cala Mariolu (pebble beach, boat only). Sardinia → · Secret beaches →
