The Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte is 142 steps climbing from the lower town to the upper church. Each RISER is decorated with a different hand-painted majolica tile — geometric, floral, narrative, spanning 1,000 years of Caltagirone ceramic design from Arab motifs (10th century) to Baroque (18th century) to contemporary. On July 24-25 (San Giacomo), the entire staircase is lit with 4,000 oil lamps (coppi) arranged to form a GIANT IMAGE visible from the town below — a tradition since the 1700s called La Luminaria. The rest of the year: artisan workshops on every street, ceramic balconies, tiled lampposts, and the quiet confidence of a town that has been making one thing extraordinarily well for a millennium.
