Caltagirone โ€” a 142-step staircase where every riser is a different hand-painted tile, in a town that's been making ceramics since the Arabs taught it how

The Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte is 142 steps climbing from the lower town to the upper church. Each RISER is decorated with a different hand-painted majolica tile โ€” geometric, floral, narrative, spanning 1,000 years of Caltagirone ceramic design from Arab motifs (10th century) to Baroque (18th century) to contemporary. On July 24-25 (San Giacomo), the entire staircase is lit with 4,000 oil lamps (coppi) arranged to form a GIANT IMAGE visible from the town below โ€” a tradition since the 1700s called La Luminaria. The rest of the year: artisan workshops on every street, ceramic balconies, tiled lampposts, and the quiet confidence of a town that has been making one thing extraordinarily well for a millennium.

What to see

La Scalinata (1606, tiles added 1954): Climb it slowly โ€” each step rewards attention. The tile designs are organized chronologically: Arab-Norman (geometric, bottom), Spanish (floral, middle), Baroque (figurative, upper). At the top: the church + a panoramic terrace over the Val di Noto. Museo della Ceramica (Teatrino, Giardino Pubblico): The complete history โ€” prehistoric to contemporary, organized in a BEAUTIFUL garden setting. โ‚ฌ4. The workshops: Via Roma, Via Luigi Sturzo, the streets around the staircase โ€” family ceramicists who paint, fire, and sell from their studios. Watch them work. Buy direct. Prices: โ‚ฌ5 (small tile) to โ‚ฌ500+ (large vases).

The Ponte San Francesco: A 18th-century bridge decorated with ceramic-faced lampposts โ€” the most photographed bridge in Sicily after Palermo's. The Carcere Borbonico: Former prison, now exhibition space and viewpoint. July 24-25 La Luminaria: 4,000 coppi (terracotta oil lamps) placed on the staircase risers, forming an image visible from below โ€” a different design each year. The staircase becomes a SCREEN painted in fire.
