In 1502, Cesare Borgia hired Leonardo da Vinci to survey and redesign the canal port of Cesenatico. Leonardo's drawing (preserved in the Bibliothèque de l'Institut de France, Paris) shows the harbor essentially AS IT IS TODAY — the canal cutting through the center of town, boats moored along both sides, the Adriatic at the end. 500 years later, the fishing boats are still there, painted in bright colors, and at Christmas a FLOATING NATIVITY SCENE is installed on the boats in the canal — life-size figures on traditional trabaccoli and bragozzo sailing boats, lit at night, reflected in the canal water.
The Porto Canale (Canal Harbor): Walk both sides — fishing boats, restaurants, the Saturday fish market. Museo della Marineria (Maritime Museum): An OUTDOOR section in the canal itself — historic sailing boats (trabaccoli, bragozzi, lance, battane) permanently moored with original painted sails. The sails are PAINTED with family symbols, animals, geometric patterns — each boat's sail was its coat of arms. Indoor section: navigation tools, models, fishing history. €6 combined. Piazza delle Conserve: Underground ice pits (conserve) where fish was stored with ice carried from the mountains — medieval refrigeration. 2 survive in the piazza.
The beach: Cesenatico has the SAME Adriatic beach as Rimini (10km south) — long, sandy, shallow, stabilimenti — but with 1/10 the crowds and 1/3 the prices. Ideal for families. Christmas Nativity (Presepe della Marineria, Dec-Jan): Life-size figures on boats in the canal — fishermen, Mary, Joseph, the Magi arriving by sea. Lit at night. The most unique nativity scene in Italy — the story happens ON WATER. Cycling: Cesenatico is the base of the Nove Colli sportive (130km, May — one of Italy's most popular amateur rides) and a stop on the Adriatic cycling path. Marco Pantani (the legendary cyclist) was born in Cesena, 15 min away — his memory is everywhere.
From Rimini: 15 min by car or train. From Bologna: 1.5h. Stay instead of Rimini if you want the Romagna coast experience without the crowd. Piadina here is AS GOOD. Eat: Al Pirata (canal-side — grilled Adriatic fish, €15-25). The fish market (Tuesday + Saturday mornings): Buy from fishermen who were on the Adriatic at 4am.
